Senator Rob Portman
448 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Portman:
Subject: 352 Mass Shootings This Year- UNBELIEVABLE !
Yesterday, in San Bernardino, CA, we witnessed the horrific No. 352 mass shooting of the year (more than one per day) killing 14 people , while 50 Senators voted against expanding background checks on gun sales to include guns purchased online and at gun shows. Universal background checks for all gun buyers are supported by 90% of Americans, 82% of gun owners and 74% of NRA members, so who are you, and your 49 other colleagues listening to, certainly not your constituents. The answer is that you are morally bankrupted by and beholding to the NRA and the gun lobby and their money (of which you have received more than ample) . Will you ever listen to the American people and stop being bullied by the NRA and the Gun Lobby?
The two shooters in San Bernardino used two assault rifles and two semi-automatic handguns, all apparently purchased legally. The Senate has previously voted against the banning of the manufacturing and sales of all assault-style weapons. My question is: Why should every Tom, Dick and Harry be able to purchase a military style assault weapon? If they want to own an assault weapon, then let them join the Army or “A well regulated Militia”.
If the Senate had had the good sense to ban the sale of assault weapons, then the two shooters in San Bernardino would not have been able to legally purchase their two assault rifles and some of those 14 people might still be alive.
In your reply to this letter, which I look forward to reading, if you bring up the argument that what we need to do is reform our mental health system , please tell me specifically what you would do to reform it and how that would actually reduce the yearly gun death toll. There are people with mental illness everywhere in the world , but only in the U.S.A. is it so easy for them to arm themselves to the teeth.
I look forward to your reply.
